Principles of Operation
Pulse
The sensor uses high-performance Piezoelectric crystals to generate short ultrasonic pulses in the form of sound waves. The sound waves are emitted from a transducer that acts as a transmitter/receiver. These pulses are directed toward the surface of the product being measured which reflects the sound waves back to the transducer.
Return to Antenna
The transit time of the reflected pulse is measured by the sensor electronics. The time is used to calculate the distance between the face of the transducer and the product being measured. By simply entering the vessel dimensions, a level-proportional signal can be displayed. It is not necessary to fill or empty the vessel in order to commission the VEGASON.
Measurement
The transit time is converted into a level value for output purposes. Due to the use of high-energy pulses, non-contact measurement of liquids and solids is possible. However, because the ultrasonic sound waves are mechanical energy, the output is most accurate when the composition of the air space between the transducer and product surface remains constant.
